10 Screen-Free Learning Activities for KG and Grade 1 Kids
Published 2026-10-27 · vCreate
Phones and tablets are useful, but young children learn a lot from using their hands, moving their bodies and talking with a grown-up. Here are ten activities that need nothing more than paper and things you already have at home.
- Count the kitchen. Ask your child to count spoons, cups or onions and write the number on a piece of paper.
- Letter of the day. Pick one letter each morning and find three things in the house that start with it.
- Grow a seed. Put green gram seeds on wet cotton wool and draw how they change every day.
- Weather chart. Each morning, look outside and draw the sun, a cloud or rain on a simple chart.
- Robot game. You are the robot. Your child gives you instructions like "two steps forward, turn left" to reach the door.
- Shape hunt. Find circles, squares and triangles around the house: a plate, a window, a slice of roti.
- Story drawing. Read a short story, then ask your child to draw their favourite part and tell you about it.
- Body parts song. Sing "head, shoulders, knees and toes" in English, then try it in Sinhala.
- Sorting game. Mix buttons or seeds and sort them by colour or size.
- Animal sounds quiz. Make an animal sound and ask your child to name the animal and where it lives.
Tips for success
Keep it playful, follow your child's interest and stop before they get tired. Ten focused minutes are worth more than an hour of struggle.
